Simply put, Energy Star 6.0® rated windows refer to a type of credentialed replacement window that has been manufactured by a company that is a designated Energy Star 6.0 Partner; has been independently tested, certified, and verified by the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC); and meets or exceeds strict energy efficiency standards set forth by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
In today’s climate- and consumer-conscious world, Energy Star 6.0 rated windows are the new standard in residential and commercial construction; however, there is no one-size-fits-all specification for Energy Star 6.0 windows. Energy Star 6.0 ratings, such as the U-factor, the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC), and the air leakage level, all vary slightly as Energy Star 6.0 windows are designed for specific climate zones.
For instance, if you live in Nashville, Tennessee (a South Central climate zone) an Energy Star 6.0 window for your region would have a U-factor rating of less than or equal to 0.30. On the other hand, if you lived in Juneau, Alaska (a Northern climate zone), an Energy Star 6.0 window for your region would have a U-factor rating of less than or equal to 0.27. Bear in mind that the U-factor correlates directly with the amount of heat that escapes through the glass, so the lower the U-factor is, the less heat will escape through the windows.
