What Is a Double-Paned Replacement Window?

A double-paned replacement window is a window consisting of two individual panes of glass separated by either a vacuum or gas-filled space. By a process called insulated glazing, these multi-pane windows are crafted with the aim of reducing heat transfer by creating a compound barrier for heat to pass through. Some multi-paned windows these days even have three separate panes of glass, with vacuums or gas fills between each pane, and while these windows do provide better energy efficiency than double-paned replacement windows, the extra glass adds significant weight to the window unit. Because of this extra weight, the frames must be made from an especially strong material, such as fiberglass.

Because of its compound construction, a double-paned replacement window also dampens exterior noise more effectively than a single pane window, so it can provide you with more peace and quiet from outside disturbances, especially when living in a bustling city like Nashville. However, some homeowners feel that double-paned windows, with their additional layers of microscopic metal coating, mute the sunlight as it passes through the glass and so they prefer single-paned windows as they provide a better quality of natural light.
