Can You Use Bleach on an Acrylic Tub?
Nowadays, acrylic tubs are a popular choice for homeowners who are renovating their bathrooms, converting their showers, or simply replacing their existing bathtubs. Acrylic is a great material for bathtub construction because it can be molded into just about any shape—square, oval, triangular, and, of course, the classic claw-foot tub. Acrylic is also good at retaining heat, which helps prevent your bathwater from going cold before you’re done soaking. But, perhaps best of all, acrylic tubs are very easy to keep clean. According to most acrylic tub manufacturers, all it takes is some warm, soapy water and a soft cloth to effectively clean your acrylic tub. Many housekeeping blogs also recommend using a vinegar/water solution or an ammonia-based glass cleaner. However, when it comes to the question of whether or not it’s okay to use bleach on an acrylic tub, it seems the jury is still out on that one.
Many acrylic tub manufacturers warn against using bleach or other abrasive cleaners as this “may void the warranty” on your bathtub. This is a fair point, and certainly something to consider when trying to protect your investment. However, many homeowners view this directive as more of a legal disclaimer designed to protect the manufacturer more so than the tub. There do seem to be plenty of people who’ve cleaned their acrylic tubs with bleach and have lived to tell about it—even blog about it. Some say liquid chlorine bleach diluted with water is fine to use, others prefer the slightly softer powdered oxygen bleach.
What there does seem to be a consensus on is that you shouldn’t use abrasive tools such as steel wool, wire brushes, or sponges with rough scrubbing pads to clean your tub because acrylic, though non-porous, does scratch quite easily. So, no matter what type of cleaner you prefer, make sure to use a soft cloth or a squeegee to avoid damaging your tub’s finish. But, if you love that ultra-deep, nose-burning clean that only bleach can provide, and you’re comfortable flirting with a voided warranty, go for it.
