How Do You Test Your Water for Hardness?

Water hardness is a term used to describe water that has a high mineral count. Hard water is filled with minerals such as calcium and magnesium that can cause issues and inconveniences for homeowners. Hard water causes mineral buildup in appliances, pipes, and on dishes. It can also cause hair and skin to feel less soft and clothes laundered in a washing machine to be stiffer. If you notice any of these problems and want to test the water hardness at your residence, there are several easy ways to do so. Many of these tools can be found at a local hardware store for just a few dollars.

Testing Instruments

A colorimeter is handheld device that measures the concentration of a solution – in this case, your home’s water supply. You can simply take a sample of your home’s water and follow the instructions provided with the device to help you get a better reading of your home’s water hardness. There are also hardness test tool kits with droppers and other devices that help give an accurate reading of your home’s water hardness.

Test Strips

Test strips are perhaps the easiest way to test your home’s water hardness. They are often made of plastic and come with chemicals on the end that react with the water once the strip is inserted into a sample. The ions in the chemicals will produce a specific color that you can compare with the given chart in the kit. Based on the color that is produced, you can get an idea of how much calcium, magnesium, or other minerals are in your water.
