How Long Do Energy-Efficient Windows Last?
While it seems like a straightforward question, there are actually a number of factors that determine how long energy-efficient windows will last. First and foremost, the quality of the windows should be considered. It goes without saying that durable, well-built windows will likely outlast those of lesser quality. If you have what are often referred to as “builder grade” windows on your home, they probably won’t last as long as a premium replacement window like those offered by Preservation.
Builder-grade energy-efficient windows might have an attractive price tag, but they typically only last between five and ten years before they start to lose their shape or show signs of wear and tear. And while premium vinyl replacement windows may require more of an initial investment, they often last between 20 and 40 years before needing to be replaced, so in the grand scheme of things, they really are a better investment to make.
In addition to window quality, another factor that can affect the lifespan of your energy-efficient windows is what style they are. A picture window, for instance, has fixed sashes, which means the window is built as a single, stationary unit. As such, picture windows and other fixed-sash windows often outlast operable windows like double-hung, casement, or sliding windows, which have moving parts such as pulleys, cranks, and rollers that can break down over time.
Other factors that can affect how long your energy-efficient windows will last are where you live and where the windows are located in your home. Windows that are subjected to overly humid or rainy weather for much of the year often start to break down before those in less humid climates. Similarly, if your windows are exposed to intense sunlight for prolonged periods of time—perhaps your home lacks good tree coverage or there are no adjacent houses—they might begin to deteriorate sooner than windows that are installed in a more shaded area of your home.
