How Do Water Filtration Systems Work?

How Do Water Filtration Systems Work Nashville TN

There are several different types of water filtration systems on the market today, and while each of these systems has a common end goal — to remove harmful or unwanted impurities from tap water — they accomplish this in different ways. Most household water filtration systems use a two-pronged approach to purifying water, which includes physical filtration and chemical filtration. First, the tap water is strained through a physical filter that removes any larger impurities. This physical filter is typically a piece of metal mesh, similar to a fine sieve, or a gauze-like membrane. The next step, the chemical filtration, entails passing the water through a material such as activated charcoal granules. As the charcoal is porous, it sequesters the finer chemical impurities that passed through the physical filter and traps them through a process called adsorption.

Other, less common water filtration systems include distilling impure tap water. In this process, the water is boiled, and since water typically boils at a lower temperature than the contaminants, the resulting steam will be free from impurities. This purified steam is then trapped and condensed in a separate container. While water filtration systems are incredibly effective at purifying drinking water, they won’t soften “hard water.” To address hard water issues, it is best to have a water softening system installed.
