Since these gases are heavier and more viscous than air, they act as an invisible insulator, reducing heat transfer through the glass unit, thus making your home more energy efficient and comfortable. Of the two common gases used for gas fills, argon is much more abundant in Earth’s atmosphere and therefore less expensive. Krypton is a better insulator than argon, but because of its higher cost and limited availability, krypton is more commonly used as a gas fill in triple-pane windows since they feature slimmer inner chambers. Other gases that are less commonly used for gas fills include xenon and nitrogen, and occasionally a mixture of argon, krypton, and oxygen is used as a gas fill.
