The U-factor, also sometimes called the U-value, measures the rate of heat transfer through a material or building surface such as a wall, window, or door. It is commonly used to rate the energy efficiency of windows and doors, and while the science required for calculating U-factors can be rather complex, all you really need to know is that, for windows, a lower U-value is more desirable because it means that less heat is able to pass through the window. What passes as a “good” U-factor is largely contingent on the climate in which you live, as the Energy Star 6.0® standards vary slightly from region to region. In a colder, northern climate, energy-efficient windows boast U-factors as low as 0.27 and 0.28, whereas central climate zones call for a U-factor of no more than 0.30. In warmer southern climates, where the majority of the home energy use is for cooling rather than heating the home, an energy-efficient U-factor could be as high as 0.40.
